Bills' Trade Offer for Christian McCaffrey Revealed

Bills' Trade Offer for Christian McCaffrey Revealed

Updated:

The San Francisco 49ers shocked the NFL world earlier this week by acquiring running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers. The Buffalo Bills were rumored to be in on the hunt for the generational RB.

Now Bills insider John Wawrow reports that the team offered a second-round pick to the Panthers, "but weren’t prepared to budge further." It shouldn't be a surprise that their offer wasn't good enough to land McCaffrey after the 49ers paid a second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-rounder for his services.

Buffalo Bills Rumors

At the end of the day, the Bills clearly weren't comfortable parting with four draft picks to bring in McCaffrey. When you consider the star RB's injury history, it's easy to see why Buffalo might have been hesitant to pay such a lofty price.

You can't fault the Bills for trying to upgrade their RB room, either. Devin Singletary, Zack Moss and James Cook are solid, but the unit has only combined for 438 rushing yards and one touchdown on 93 carries. For reference, Josh Allen has 257 rushing yards and two TDs by himself on 47 carries.

Still, it was fun imagining what McCaffrey on the Bills would look like. They're already scoring at a 29.3 PPG clip, ranking second-best in the NFL. Adding CMC to an offense that already includes the likes of Allen, Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis would definitely put things over the top.

With CMC off the market, the Bills will likely stick with their RB trio for the remainder of the season. Obviously, things have worked out so far as Buffalo sits 5-1 during its Week 7 bye. Hopefully, the Bills' RBs find a way to step up down the stretch, making Allen's life that much easier.

Even without McCaffrey in the backfield, the Bills are still one of the NFL's best teams. After all, they're still FanDuel Sportbook's +300 favorite to win Super Bowl LVII in February.
