Bills Secondary Confirms Another Injury Blow on Sunday

Updated:

The Buffalo Bills enter a pivotal Week 3 matchup against the Miami Dolphins unhealthy from a defensive standpoint. Not only was safety Micah Hyde confirmed to have suffered a season-ending neck injury, but now fellow safety Jordan Poyer will not suit up on Sunday due to a foot injury.

Poyer was able to practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday before sitting out entirely on Thursday. The All-Pro talent returned in a limited capacity again on Friday, but reportedly didn't make enough strides to warrant an active status. A concrete timeline for his return has yet to be revealed.

Keep in mind Poyer also missed some time in training camp with an elbow issue. The 31-year-old has been a star in the Bills' secondary and posted 93 tackles (8 for loss), 3.0 sacks, 9 pass breakups and 5 interceptions in 2021. He has already logged 3 pass breakups and 2 interceptions so far this season.

The injuries to Hyde, Poyer, cornerback Tre'Davious White and cornerback Dane Jackson leave Buffalo searching for help in pass coverage. Look for the Bills to rely on veteran Taron Johnson and a group of inexperienced guys in Christian Benford, Kaiir Elam, Damar Hamlin, and Jaquan Johnson.

These injuries couldn't have come with much worse timing, either. Miami has a powerful passing attack led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as well as wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The two pass-catchers have combined for 524 yards and 5 touchdowns on 34 receptions this year.

The Bills are slated as a 4.5-point road favorite over the Dolphins, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
