Big-Name Candidate Already Ruled Out in Panthers' Head-Coaching Search

Updated:

The Carolina Panthers are in need of a new head coach after parting ways with Matt Rhule midway through the 2022 season. Though interim Steve Wilks has supporters on his side in Carolina, the team is expected to conduct a wide-ranging search for its next HC.

However, one big-name candidate has already been ruled out as a potential option.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports Jim Harbaugh and Panthers owner David Tepper discussed the opening recently. However, it wasn't a formal interview and Carolina is going to "focus its efforts elsewhere."

This is certainly a surprise, especially since Harbaugh is the one that's been rumored to have significant interest in the Carolina job. Jones confirmed this, saying Harbaugh (or his camp) called Tepper with "some regularity in recent weeks," which eventually led to their talk.

Despite Harbaugh's outreach, it appears the Panthers simply aren't interested. The current Michigan head coach seems to be seriously contemplating a return to the NFL ranks after several major bowl appearances with the Wolverines.

With Harbaugh likely out, it remains to be seen what direction Carolina opts to go. Targeting a more offensive-minded head coach may be in Tepper's plans.
