Athletics Get Optimistic News on Latest Frankie Montas Injury Update

Updated:

Oakland Athletics fans across the country haven't had much to cheer about this year, with Frankie Montas' recent injury only adding to those woes. The 29-year-old starting pitcher has been sidelined for nearly a week with a shoulder injury, leaving fans wondering about a return date.

While an exact date is still unknown, the A's received a terrific update regarding their veteran hurler on Saturday. Team manager Mark Kotsay noted that Montas was able to play catch at the most recent practice, with the hope being that he can return sometime before the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.

The big main aspect of Montas' quick turnaround is that he, fortunately, didn't require an injured list stint. He's also seen as one of the Athletics' top trade pieces ahead of August's deadline, so they're likely breathing a sigh of relief knowing that his trade value is intact.

Montas shares the American League lead with nine losses in 17 starts so far, but that has more to do with how bad the A's have been. The Dominican hurler's pitching has proven that he still has value for contenders, tallying a 3.26 ERA while striking out 100 batters over 96.2 innings pitched.

All eyes will be on Montas to see if his recovery trend continues. He likely won't be back by the end of the weekend, but the A's have six road games against the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers leading up to the All-Star Game between Monday and next Saturday.

Regardless, it's great to hear that Montas is recovering nicely. With the Athletics firmly out of the 2022 World Series hunt on FanDuel Sportsbook, he should at least be able to nab them a decent prospect or two on the trade market.
