Astros Named Potential Trade Fit for Veteran First Baseman

Updated:

The Houston Astros remain the favorite to win the AL West and have their eyes set on going back to the World Series. Adding a few more players to the mix would make this roster elite, though. MLB Insider Mark Feinsand recently named the Astros a potential trade fit for first baseman Trey Mancini.

Houston Astros Trade Rumors

Mancini has overcome a slow start by posting an impressive .913 OPS since May 3 (37 games). Overall, the 30-year-old slugger is slashing .293/.374/.428 for the Baltimore Orioles to go along with 25 runs scored and 25 RBI. Mancini has also smacked 6 home runs and 9 doubles in 57 games.

The fact that Mancini is playing on a contract that expires after 2023 for a team in the midst of a rebuild makes him the perfect trade target for contending teams. That's especially the case for Houston considering Yuli Gurriel has failed to make a consistent impact when in the lineup.

Gurriel is slashing .221/.274/.357 on the season just one year after leading the league with a .319 batting average. Mancini could create a platoon situation for manager Dusty Baker at first base. His experience playing in the corner outfield spots would give Baker flexibility in his lineup choices, too.

For now, the Astros will look to strengthen their lead in the AL West and make the playoffs for the sixth time in a row. Houston has odds set at -1000 to earn a divisional crown and owns the third-best odds to win the World Series at +700, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
