Antonio Gibson Fantasy Outlook & Injury Update 2022 (Will His Training Camp Injury Be a Concern?)

Antonio Gibson Fantasy Outlook & Injury Update 2022 (Will His Training Camp Injury Be a Concern?)

Updated:

Antonio Gibson's rookie performance in 2020 left something to be desired in the eyes of fantasy managers. Fortunately, the Washington Commanders running back put any doubts to bed last year, finishing as the RB10 across PPR fantasy formats.

Gibson can rush with the best of them, possessing all of the talent in the world to build on last year's performance. However, after suffering a training camp injury, does the 24-year-old's fantasy outlook still look strong heading into the 2022 NFL season?

Antonio Gibson Fantasy Football Outlook

Gibson saw plenty of opportunities with the Commanders last year. He turned 258 carries into 1,037 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, making 42 catches as well for 294 receiving yards and another three TDs.

Even though Gibson is the clear-cut No. 1 RB in Washington, he does lose some chances due to J.D. McKissic's superior pass-catching talents. Gibson still performed well last year despite McKissic's 91 total touches, however, only time will tell if that'll lead to more opportunities this year for the backup.

Gibson needs wideouts Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson to stay healthy throughout the year. They're quite the talented trio that can open the field for Gibson when healthy. If they can't stay on the field, it'll be a tougher season for managers who drafted Washington's lead rusher.

Antonio Gibson Injury Update

It was revealed on Wednesday that Gibson was opening training camp with a hamstring injury that he suffered during organized team activities in June. The good news is that the Commanders said his absence was out of caution, so the initial belief is that the injury isn't too serious.

Gibson's yet to be a full participant in practice, but he did manage to participate in some of Thursday and Friday's pre-activity warm-ups. It's not exactly the news that some fans want to hear, but it's still a positive sign to know that he can at least jog and catch footballs.

Hamstrings are tricky, so it's good that the Commanders are being cautious with their No. 1 RB. Unless Gibson's recovery stalls or he experiences a setback, it appears as if he'll be fine to begin the 2022 NFL season.

Antonio Gibson Projections

Projections from the NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook are where you'd expect them to be for Gibson. When it comes to being the league's rushing yard leader, his +3000 odds put him in a five-way tie for the 15th-best odds. He also has the T-22nd odds (+3500) to finish with the most rushing TDs.

FanDuel also lists Gibson's project rushing yards total at 825.5 with -112 odds on both the over and under. He easily surpassed the total by averaging 4.0 yards on 258 carries. Assuming he follows that trend, it'd take about 207 carries to hit the over in 2022 — certainly within the realm of possibility if he stays healthy.

Is Antonio Gibson a Good Fantasy Football Pick?

Gibson is a tremendous football player and a great option to have on your fantasy roster. Even though McKissic's continued presence may limit Gibson's ceiling in PPR formats, he's still one of the better rushing options out there.

Something to like about Gibson in fantasy is the Commanders' schedule. Back in May, ESPN's Mike Clay said that Washington has the easiest slate of 2022 games. Assuming that the Commanders can capitalize on that, some favorable game scripts could lead to Gibson seeing even more rushing opportunities — much to the delight of fantasy managers.
