AL MVP Race 2022: Odds Highlight Aaron Judge as Big Favorite Over Shohei Ohtani

Updated:

Heading into the 2022 MLB season, the AL MVP odds had a predictable favorite. Shohei Ohtani won the award in 2021, and accordingly his +340 odds were the best in the AL before Opening Day.

Aaron Judge AL MVP Odds

Slashing an absurd .378/.463/.800 so far in June, Aaron Judge is surging in what had already been a great season. His +115 odds to win AL MVP make him the favorite, with an implied probability of 46.5% to win the award. He leads the AL in WAR at 3.7, also leading the league in home runs (24) and runs (52) while sitting second in RBI (48).

Shohei Ohtani AL MVP Odds

The defending AL MVP, Shohei Ohtani opened as a +340 favorite to win AL MVP, but those odds have fallen to +400, putting him second behind Judge in the race with an implied probability of 20.0%. His hitting numbers have fallen back to earth a bit since last year, slashing .255/.333/.476, and despite an increase in K/9 as a pitcher (11.8 in 2022), his ERA has also jumped some to 3.64.

Mike Trout AL MVP Odds

The first 3-time AL MVP since Yogi Berra, Mike Trout is annually in the preseason discussion. He has also held his ground throughout the year. At +650 (implied 13.3% probability), he has barely fallen from his +600 opening line, and he still ranks No. 3 in the AL.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. AL MVP Odds

Despite being tied for second in the AL MVP odds before opening day, Vladimir Guerrero doesn't appear to be a legitimate contender at this point. His +3500 odds on FanDuel rank him seventh in the AL, with an implied probability of just 2.8% to win AL MVP in 2022.
