5 Facts Buffalo Bills Fans Should Know About Stefon Diggs

Updated:

Buffalo Bills fans have to be excited about this offseason. Tom Brady is out of the AFC East, their Super Bowl odds are climbing, and they brought in a new superstar wide receiver in Stefon Diggs.

Diggs was a relatively unheralded prospect coming out of college, going in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, and Bills fans may be unfamiliar with the full body of work their new WR1 has put together.

With that in mind, here are five facts Bills fans should know about Stefon Diggs.

1. Diggs Played on Both Sides of the Ball as a High School Senior

Playing for Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Maryland, Diggs did it all in his senior year. He had 8 touchdowns and 770 receiving yards, added 277 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and contributed 31.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks. He has continued to run the ball well in the pros, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt on 29 carries, though he has yet to record a tackle at the NFL level.

2. Diggs Has the Second-Most Receiving Yards in Maryland History

Diggs played three seasons for the Maryland Terrapins, and the only player ahead of him in the program's receiving last is Jermaine Lewis, who played four years (from 1992 to 1995). Diggs' 2,227 yards put him ahead of a pair of other NFL speedsters in Torrey Smith (2,215) and Darrius Heyward-Bey (2,089).

3. Only One Fifth-Round Pick in NFL History has Averaged More Receiving Yards per Game

Diggs made an immediate impact when he got a chance as a rookie, and he hasn't slowed down Since. Over 70 contests in five years, Diggs is averaging 66.0 receiving yards per game. The only fifth-round pick in NFL history with a higher average is Tyreek Hill, who has averaged 69.7 across 59 games.

4. Diggs Brings Major Year-Over-Year Consistency

Diggs has seen over 80 targets in all five of his NFL seasons, and he has averaged at least 8.0 yards per target in four of the five. That puts him behind only two players in the NFL (Julio Jones and Travis Kelce) who have at least 80 targets and at least 8.0 yards per reception in each of the last five years.

5. Diggs is Coming Off the Best Season of His Career

The best may be yet to come. Diggs saw 94 targets in the run-heavy Minnesota Vikings offense in 2019, and his efficiency carried him to a huge year. His 1,130 yards were a career-best, as were his 17.9 yards per reception and 12.0 yards per target (second in the NFL). He's still just 26 years old, and the sky could be the limit for Diggs as he continues to make improvements in his new home.
