4 Best NFL Wide Receivers to Ever Come Out of Oklahoma

4 Best NFL Wide Receivers to Ever Come Out of Oklahoma

Updated:

The Oklahoma Sooners have been a college football program since 1903. During that time, they are 855-307-47, with 46 Conference Championships. This storied program has won a lot, to say the least, and they've really gotten the job done with an explosive passing game in recent years.

The most recent one with promise is Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, who has burst on to the scene with the Baltimore Ravens. It's too early to say where he will end up on this list, if his career continues positively. Here's a look at four of the best NFL receivers to come out of Norman before playing at the next level.

4. Sterling Shepard (2016-19)

Early in his career, Sterling Shepard was an immediate favorite to top Oklahoma's all-time receiving yards list in the NFL. The Oklahoma City native made the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team in 2016 after being drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the NFL Draft. Since then, his development has been derailed, due to an inability to stay on the field. The concussions have been the greatest problem for Shepard to overcome, and while he has accumulated just shy of 3,000 receiving yards in four seasons, the future is uncertain for the 27-year-old talent.

3. Lance Rentzel (1965-74)

Lance Rentzel's 4,826 NFL career receiving yards are the fourth-most among players to come out of Oklahoma. He started out as more of a special teams specialist and spell running back before getting an opportunity as a full-time wideout with the Dallas Cowboys. Rentzel's lone 1,000-yard receiving year was in 1968, and he had a career-high 12 touchdowns in 1969. However, his record will likely be broken sooner than later.

2. Kenny Stills (2013-19)

We don't necessarily think of Kenny Stills as a top NFL wide receiver, but he is in the conversation as far as former Sooners are concerned. Drafted in the fifth round, Stills was a bit of a surprise success story for the New Orleans Saints as a deep ball threat. He has since played for the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans (his present day franchise). Stills has never caught more than 1,000 yards in a single season, but he has been a talented role play for many years, and he should pass Rentzel on the all-time Oklahoma graduates list next season, assuming he stays healthy.

1. Tommy McDonald (1957-68)

While some younger football fans may not be as familiar with Tommy McDonald, there's absolutely no question about where he belongs on this list. McDonald's 8,410 career NFL receiving yards are the most by any player to come out of Oklahoma, leading tight end Keith Jackson's second-place mark by more than 3,000 yards. After winning back-to-back National Championships with the Sooners in college (1955-56), McDonald went on to become a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Philadelphia Eagles HOF as a two-time NFL leader in receiving TDs (1958, 1961), one-time leader in receiving yards (1961), six-time Pro Bowler (1958-62, 1965), NFL Champion (1960) and two-time First-Team All-Pro (1959-60).
