4 Best NFL Quarterbacks to Ever Come Out of Georgia

There have been some great quarterbacks in Georgia Bulldogs history, but their college greats didn't go on to have especially strong professional careers. The list of Bulldogs passers to thrive at the NFL level is a short one, but it includes a couple really impressive names.

With that in mind, here are four of the best NFL quarterbacks to ever come out of Georgia.

4. Quincy Carter

The benchmark to make it to No. 4 on this list isn't too high. Zeke Bratkowski has a viable claim to the spot, with over 10,000 passing yards in his long NFL career, but his numbers were all about longevity, never throwing for even 1,600 yards in a season and tallying 31 touchdowns to 67 interceptions in the four years in which he had at least 1,000 yards. Quincy Carter threw for 6,337 yards in the pros, but his one-year peak earns him the edge on this list. In 2003 he was the Dallas Cowboys' full-time starter, throwing for 3,302 yards and leading them to a 10-6 record.

3. Charley Trippi

Even though Charley Trippi played a multitude of positions both at Georgia and in the NFL, it should be noted that the former 1945 No. 1 overall pick made one of his two Pro Bowls in his 1952 season that saw him throw the second-most passing attempts of his career, with 181. Trippi was a national champion (1942), SEC Player of the Year (1946), Unanimous All-American (1946) and Maxwell Award winner (1946) during his time with Georgia, before he became an NFL champion (1947), two-time Pro Bowler (1952-53) and eventual Pro Football Hall-of-Famer.

2. Matthew Stafford

Second in NFL passing yards among all Georgia passers, Matthew Stafford eclipsed the 40,000 yard mark in 2019, bringing his career total to 41,025 with 256 touchdowns (also No. 2). Stafford threw for at least 4,000 yards in seven consecutive seasons (2011 to 2017), and if he can get healthy again he could find his way into the top 15 on the all-time NFL passing list.

1. Fran Tarkenton

Ahead of Stafford at No. 12 in NFL history, Fran Tarkenton threw for 47,003 yards from 1961 to 1978, sitting as the NFL's all-time leading passer at the time of his retirement. The Hall-of-Famer never won the Super Bowl, but he led the Minnesota Vikings to three appearances, was named the NFL MVP in 1975 and was named to nine Pro Bowls.
