3 Most Likely Mike Gesicki Trade Destinations

Tight end Mike Gesicki is set to play this NFL season on the franchise tag after failing to agree to a new contract with the Miami Dolphins. Combine his $10.9 million salary with the fact the he is learning a new position and 2022 sets up as a make or break year for Gesicki. That is if he is even on the team.

Miami has "brought up" Gesicki's name in trade conversations, according to ProFootballFocus' Doug Kyed. There's no guarantee that he will be dealt, but the latest rumors make taking a look at potential suitors worth the time. Here's three of the most likely trade destinations for the Dolphins starting TE.

3. New Orleans Saints

The Saints made it a point to revamp their offense with the additions of wide receivers Jarvis Landry and rookie Chris Olave this offseason. It's all part of an effort to surround quarterback Jameis Winston with as many weapons as possible in his return from an ACL injury. That weaponry would be even scarier with Gesicki in the mix. The Penn State product has increased his yards after catch total in each of his four NFL seasons and averages a reliable 11.3 yards per receptions across 64 career games. New Orleans has gotten little production out of Adam Trautman, but the flashes shown by Juwan Johnson last year show what a capable TE can do in this offense. Gesicki would thrive in the Big Easy.

2. New York Giants

New York hasn't made the NFL Playoffs since 2016 and should always be looking for ways to upgrade the roster. After seeing Evan Engram depart in free agency, there is no depth at the TE spot, either. Rookie Daniel Bellinger is expected to earn the Week 1 starting gig after posting 771 yards to go along with 5 touchdowns in four college seasons. Gesicki has the size (6-foot-6, 247 pounds) to be quarterback Daniel Jones go-to target in the red zone. That's something he has been missing for a while now. If the Dolphins truly want to get rid of Gesicki, the price shouldn't be too high for the Giants to make a deal.

1. Carolina Panthers

Seeing Gesicki land in Carolina would make sense for a number of reasons. The Panthers are in the midst of a small roster rebuild and Gesicki fits the bill at only 26 years of age. There is also a huge hole at the position. Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble combined for 368 yards and 1 touchdowns on 65 receptions in 2021. Meanwhile, Gesicki set career-high marks in targets (112), receptions (73) and receiving yards (780). Parting with a draft pick or two to provide quarterback Baker Mayfield with another viable weapon in the passing attack would go a long way in fixing Carolina's offensive issues. After all, this is a team that averaged the third-fewest yards per game in the NFL last year (298.9).
