3 Horses Who Could Win the 2023 Triple Crown

Updated:

It's been a long seven months on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, and the Championship Series races since February have produced the top horses on the Triple Crown trail.

But the potential Triple Crown winner has to capture the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on May 6 to start, and here are some horses who could win the Kentucky Derby as Triple Crown contenders.

1. Tapit Trice

Tapit Trice is a major Kentucky Derby contender with a top Triple Crown-winning trainer in his stall in Todd Pletcher. Should he win the Run for the Roses, he'll also become the favorite to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. His sire Tapit has produced three Belmont Stakes winners, so this is a horse bred to go longer distances and a threat to pull off the rare feat of winning the Triple Crown.

2. Derma Sotogake

Derma Sotogake may be a dark horse to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby, but this well-bred son of Mind Your Biscuits has superb speed and tactical flexibility. He's been racing nearly every month since last August and can handle the rigors of 3 major races in five weeks.

3. Forte

Forte is also trained by Triple Crown-winning trainer Todd Pletcher. He's the logical favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and first leg of the Triple Crown. The champion 2-year-old has won 6-of-7 starts and proven his speed and tactical ability across many racetracts. While Forte breeding is less stamina robust. he's still proven to be a reliable runner who simply wins races.
