3 Greatest Running Backs in Denver Broncos History

The Denver Broncos are one of the most impressive franchises in NFL history, with the second-most Super Bowl appearances of any team.

Through all this success, they've had some of the league's all-time greats suit up on both sides of the ball, and the running back position is no exception.

With that in mind, here are the three greatest running backs in Denver Broncos history.

3. Clinton Portis (2002-2003)

An all-time great in just two seasons? That's how good Clinton Portis was when he started his career with the Broncos. Portis rushed for at least 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns in each of his two seasons, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. He is the eighth leading rusher in franchise history despite playing just 29 games, while everyone ahead of him on the list played at least 60. He is also the franchise leader in rushing yards per game (106.9). Making things even sweeter, even his departure was a huge boon for the Broncos — as he was traded to the Washington Redskins in exchange for Champ Bailey.

2. Floyd Little (1967-1975)

Floyd Little is No. 2 in franchise history in rushing attempts (1,641), yards (6,323) and touchdowns (43). The Hall-of-Famer did it all in Denver, also adding 215 receptions, 81 punt returns, 104 kick returns and even 9 pass attempts over his nine-year career, finishing with 12,173 all-purpose yards.

1. Terrell Davis (1995-2001)

Leading Little in all three of those rushing categories, Terrell Davis is one of the greatest running backs in NFL history, let alone franchise history. The sixth-round pick had over 1,000 more rushing yards than Little while playing 39 fewer games, ranking second to Portis with 97.5 yards per game. More importantly, TD was also the workhorse on the Broncos' back-to-back Super Bowl-winning teams. He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in both 1997 and 1998, racking up 1,750 and an absurd 2,008 yards in those campaigns.
