3 Greatest Quarterbacks in Florida History

3 Greatest Quarterbacks in Florida History

Updated:

The Florida Gators are one of the more well-known programs in college football, founded in 1911 and coming up on its 108th season. The university most recently won two BCS Championships under Urban Meyer in 2006 and 2008.

It's pretty hard to have any success in football without a great quarterback, especially at the collegiate level. This sport has changed over the years, becoming more pass friendly, especially in college. Florida's first Heisman Trophy winner was QB Steve Spurrier in 1966. His numbers don't jump off the page, being from a different era, but he was 23-9 as a Gator and a two-time First Team All American.

Spurrier deserves an honorable mention for his accolades as a player and coach, but his stats hold him back. Here are the top three Florida quarterbacks of all-time.

3. Chris Leak (2003-06)

More of a compiler, Chris Leak holds the Gators record for all-time passing yards at 11,213 in four seasons. He is tied for the second-most passing TDs in Florida history. Leak was a BCS National Champion MVP (the first National Championship in school history) in 2006, with a 37-14 record as a Gator. His NFL career never materialized, but he did have some success in alternative football leagues.

2. Danny Wuerffel (1993-96)

Danny Wuerffel is second to Leak on the all-time passing yardage Gator ranks, but he's first in passing touchdowns by a wide margin. He threw 114 TD's, and the same amount of interceptions as Leak. His quarterback rating was 163.6, with a 45-6 record during his tenure. Wuerffel was also a Heisman Trophy winner in 1996, not to mention a First Team All-American in '95 and '96, and he led the Gators to their first title in his stellar senior season.

1. Tim Tebow (2006-09)

Taking over for Chris Leak after his graduation, Tim Tebow has become one of the most famous Gators of all-time, if not the most. Popular for his style of play and on-and-off the field leadership, Tebow helped win the second BCS National Championship under Urban Meyer in 2008. As the first true dual-threat QB in Gators history, Tebow threw for over 9,000 yards and rushed for almost 3,000. He had 145 total touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 170.8. Tebow is also the schools all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, with 57, which is 21 more than second on the list, Emmitt Smith. The Gators legend was also a Heisman winner in 2007, and a First Team All-American in '07 and '08. He has since had an up-and-down NFL career, followed by a minor league baseball career and success as a college football analyst, but Tebow will always be best known as a Gator.
