The Detroit Tigers are one of the most famous and storied franchises in MLB, so it makes sense that they've had some of the best outfielders in the history of the sport. Over the last 120 years in Detroit, the Tigers have won 11 pennants and four World Series crowns.
We've taken a look at the best outfielders in Tigers history. Without further ado, here's a list of their three best outfielders
3. Harry Heilmann
Harry Heilmann was a legendary player during the 1920s. One of the best pure hitters ever, Heilmann hit .403 in 1923 and also had three seasons where he hit over .390. As the game changed during his career, Heilmann also developed into a solid power hitter, slugging 164 homers for Detroit. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1952.
2. Al Kaline
Al Kaline became a franchise legend during his 22 years with the Tigers from 1953-1974. Kaline did everything for the Tigers. He tallied 3,007 hits, smashed 399 homers, and won nine Gold Glove Awards for his prowess in right field. Kaline made 13 consecutive All-Star Teams and was regarded as one of the best players in the history of the game when elected to the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 1980. After his career, Kaline stayed with the Tigers as a broadcaster and a special assistant to the GM before passing away this April at 85.
1. Ty Cobb
For better or for worse, Ty Cobb is in almost every list of top ten baseball players that ever lived. Cobb spent 22 years in Detroit and was the greatest hitter of the dead ball era. Cobb led the league in OPS+ and batting average for nine consecutive seasons. His career batting average of .366 remains an all-time record that will likely never be broken. While his baseball achievements stand alone, his arrogance, combative style of play, and frequent displays of racism have marred the public's memory of the unquestioned greatest Tiger of all time.
