3 Free Agents the Brewers Need to Target This Offseason

There was a point during the 2022 MLB season when the Milwaukee Brewers looked like a playoff lock. They led the NL Central for the majority of the season up until August, only to finish with an 86-76 record, missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2017.

If the Brewers want to have a better run during the 2023 campaign, general manager Matt Arnold must leave no stone unturned as far as free agency goes. Fortunately, there are a number of options out there that can help him with his goal.

Here are three free agents that Milwaukee needs to target this offseason.

1. Willson Contreras, C

The Brewers didn't get much offensive production out of their catchers last season. Victor Caratini and Omar Narvaez combined for just 13 home runs and 57 RBIs, while neither man had an on-base percentage better than .300. With Narvaez hitting free agency, it makes perfect sense for Milwaukee to target someone like Willson Contreras. The veteran backstop looked terrific last season, mashing 22 homers with 55 RBIs and slashing .243/.349/.466 in 113 games with the Chicago Cubs. At 30 years old, Contreras is someone who can contribute to the Brewers' success for years to come. The three-time All-Star is one of the best offensive players at his position, so if Milwaukee wants better production out of the catcher spot, he's the guy.

2. J.D. Martinez, DH

If J.D. Martinez and the Boston Red Sox do part ways this offseason, the Brewers should contact the experienced slugger. Though Andrew McCutchen hit 17 homers with 69 RBIs as Milwaukee's primary designated hitter in 2022, his hitting wasn't the most consistent and he ended up spending 52 games in the outfield. Meanwhile, Martinez would be a more dedicated fit for the DH role. The 35-year-old is coming off a down season by his standards but still earned his fourth All-Star nod in five seasons. Throw in the fact that he also brings experience with a 2018 World Series ring and it isn't tough to see how Martinez would be a good fit in Milwaukee.

3. Zack Greinke, SP

The Brewers could use some consistency from their starting rotation next season, making a proven vet like Zack Greinke a worthwhile option. The 38-year-old hurler pitched well for a mediocre Kansas City Royals team last season, posting a 3.68 ERA in 137 innings over 26 starts. Greinke also has familiarity with the organization after previously spending a season and a half with Milwaukee earlier in his career. Considering how he owns a 16-5 record with a 3.41 ERA in 30 career games (29 starts) at Miller Park, Greinke is clearly someone who could add stability to the Brewers' rotation.
