Marlins Kick Off Manager Interviews With In-Demand Candidate

Updated:

The Miami Marlins' season fell apart during the second half as the team went just 26-45 down the stretch, finishing 32.0 games back of the division lead. Thanks to their second straight NL East fourth-place finish, the team opted to part ways with incumbent manager Don Mattingly.

Mattingly was not fired, but the team mutually parted ways at the conclusion of the regular season. Fortunately, the Marlins are quick to begin their search for a new clubhouse lead.

Marlins Manager Search

MLB insider Jim Bowden reported the Marlins brought in Pedro Grifol to interview for the open position. Miami conducted this interview with the current bench coach of the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

Reports suggest Grifol is one of the early candidates popping up a number of team's managerial searches. The Royals and Chicago White Sox have also been linked to his services. Grifol spent the past three years working as Kansas City's bench coach and previous held a director of minor league operations role with the Seattle Mariners.

General manager Kim Ng opened up about Miami's search last week.

"Some of the candidates are involved in the postseason. Obviously, it's an exciting time for them, and we have to work around that schedule... But at the same time, we're trying to proceed as quickly as we can as well."

Mattingly operated in his role from 2016 until this past year. Prior to that, the Marlins went through six different skippers in the previous five years.
