Likely Jean Segura Free Agency Price Tag Revealed

Despite losing the World Series less than a week ago, the Philadelphia Phillies haven't wasted time making offseason changes. The Phillies declined infielder Jean Segura's $17 million option earlier this week, leaving fans wondering where the two-time MLB All-Star will play next season now that free agency is here.

While it remains to be seen where Segura will play next season, MLB insider Kiley McDaniel has a pretty good idea as to what the 32-year-old's next contract will look like.

McDaniel projects that Segura will receive a two-year, $19 million in free agency. For reference, that would be much smaller than his last contract, which was a five-year, $70 million arbitration extension with the Seattle Mariners back in 2017.

McDaniel touts Segura as an "above-average big league hitter" and "defensive second baseman." He's still capable of being an everyday player, but interested teams don't want to give him too much term or money to avoid the risk of his "decline into reserve status."

Injuries held Segura to just 98 games in 2022 — the lowest total of his career for a 162-game season. He still contributed whenever he could, amassing 10 home runs, 33 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and 25 walks while slashing .277/.336/.387. Furthermore, he posted a .990 field percentage with 57 double plays over 1,080.1 innings at second base.

Even if he's no longer an All-Star, Segura is a proven veteran who can improve any team's infield defense. Only time will tell how long it'll take for him to find the sixth team of his 12-year MLB career.
