While the top fantasy baseball assets provide the floor for your team, finding sleepers in the later rounds is key to determining your ceiling.
Hunting for sleeper candidates, by definition, is a volatile task. For every sleeper that does turn into a great pick, there are two or three that go nowhere. However, this process can be the difference between a first-place finish and stumbling to a losing season. That makes it crucial to hit on your sleeper picks.
With that in mind, here are our top three sleeper second basemen for the 2021 MLB season.
1. Kolten Wong, Milwaukee Brewers
Kolten Wong's signing with the Milwaukee Brewers comes with a lot of newfound upside in the fantasy baseball world. His current average draft position (ADP) of No. 31 among 2B should rise as we get closer to Opening Day. He is set to be the team's everyday leadoff hitter and should see an increase in runs scored. Wong could also easily end up stealing 15+ bases with his speed and he even hit double-digit home runs back in 2019. The second base position does not feature much depth so selecting Wong as a utility piece for your lineup is a great strategy.
2. Joey Wendle, Tampa Bay Rays
The main upside with drafting Joey Wendle is the position flexibility he brings to your lineup. He will be eligible at 2B, 3B, and SS in most leagues in 2021 and should play almost everyday for the Tampa Bay Rays. That same thing cannot be said about many of the second basemen being drafted around him. He doesn't have a lot of power, but excels at scoring runs and stealing bases. Wendle remains an underrated option given he has the potential to be a top 20 second baseman, but is currently being drafted outside of the top 30 at the position.
3. Jean Segura, Philadelphia Phillies
At this point in his career, you know what you are going to get out of Jean Segura. He is capable of scoring 75+ runs, stealing 10+ bases and hitting double-digit home runs. However, he is being drafted as the 21st second baseman off the board, according to FantasyPros' ADP data. He has all the makings of a top 15 finish at the position in 2021 and could even exceed expectations hitting in the middle of a powerful Philadelphia Phillies' lineup. Much like Wong, selecting Segura as a utility player or backup second baseman could be a move that puts your team over the top.
