Surprise 49ers Player Ruled Out for NFC Championship

Updated:

After a full week of anticipation, the San Francisco 49ers will finally take the field on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. This contest between San Francisco and the Philadelphia Eagles is sure to be a battle as these teams vie for a spot in the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, though, one surprise 49ers player won't be joining his squad.

Running back Elijah Mitchell has been ruled out on Sunday to a groin injury. Mitchell was listed as a DNP throughout practice this week, putting his status in jeopardy.

However, ESPN's Adam Scehfter said Sunday morning that the RB would suit up against the Eagles, which makes news of his absence a shock.

This is certainly a blow to San Francisco's backfield. Mitchell and Christian McCaffrey form a dynamic one-two punch that puts pressure on opposing defenses no matter who's in.

Now, it'll be veteran Tevin Coleman, who was called up from the practice squad on Saturday, taking Mitchell's play. Hopefully his familiarity with the offense allows him to fill in nicely for his fellow RB.
