Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 5/28/23

Updated:

The rebranded spring portion of the Santa Anita six-month racing season started on Friday, April 21 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

There are 10 races on Sunday at "The Great Race Place" including five stakes races. Post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local time.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Santa Anita Betting

According to numberFire horse racing projections and Guaranteed Tip Sheet, these are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing today.

The May 27 card at Santa Anita produced a pair of stakes race winners on these pages. Did you also follow FanDuel Racing picks and cash at Santa Anita and top pick Pequena Tormenta, an 11-length winner? The April 22 card at Santa Anita went 3-for-3 winners including a pair of stakes races, plus two more winners on May 12 including an Exacta score.

FanDuel Racing's May 19 picks at Pimlico went 3-for-3 and produced an 11/1 winner on Taxed in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes that also paid $190 on a $2 exacta bet.

1. Ceiling Crusher and Carole Lombard, Race 5

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/5 and 4/1

Race 5 is the $150,000 Melair Stakes for Cal-bred 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. Just five runners and Ceiling Crusher (3/5) is the top pick with the meets top jockey Juan Hernandez riding. Clearly no value in win betting, but Ceiling has crushed his opponents and is unbeaten in three races. Her minor stakes win here last month produced the second-fastest Beyer speed figure by a 3-year-old filly in North America.

Tom's Regret (4/1) has early speed and trying a route for the first time. Carole Lombard (4/1) could challenge with leading jockey Ramon Vazquez riding for EPO trainer Phil D'Amato.

2. Clouseau and Hacking It Up, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/1 and 2/1

Race 8 is the $150,000 Snow Chief Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Hacking It Up (2/1) is the favorite with top turf jockey Umberto Rispoli riding. He's 2-for-2 on the turf with a minor stakes win up North at Golden Gate last out from a race that has produced recent winners in the Snow Chief. Hacking It Up also won an Allowance race at Santa Anita in Feb.

Boss Sully (5/2) is a clear challenger and he ran a final quarter mile in :22.56 seconds to finish second last start in his first route try.

The numberFire data projects a longshot Upward Mobility (15/1) to challenge for the win along with Clouseau (5/1), who is a top win challenger of Guaranteed Tip Sheet after he ran the top last race speed figure in this field.

3. Brickyard Ride and The Chosen Vron, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 6/5 and 1/1

Race 9 is the $100,000 Thor's Echo Stakes for Cal-breds sprinting 6 furlongs. Just five runners, and the winner is expected to come from the two prohibitive favorites, Brickyard Ride (6/5) and The Chosen Vron (1/1).

Brickyard Ride has won 10-of-15 at Santa Anita, including the highest last-race speed figure, according to Guaranteed Tip Sheet. Top jockey Juan Hernandez rides him again, and a win would be Brickyard Ride's ninth stakes win at Santa Anita - fifth-most all time.

The Chosen Vron has six wins in seven dirt starts at Santa Anita. 'Vron has won six straight Calbred stakes.
