MLB Insider Says Astros GM Could Lose Job to Outside Executive

Updated:

Baseball, like many of the other professional sports leagues, is a business. Just ask Houston Astros General Manager James Click. Just days after his constructed roster won the 2022 World Series, Click's future in Houston is already up in the air.

Click's contract expired on Oct. 31 and while he maintains discussions with the front office about a new deal, one MLB insider thinks Click could lose his job to an outside executive.

Jon Heyman reported Wednesday that a simple one-year extension is potentially on the table, although that's a short offer considering Click joined the organization in 2020. The Astros have gone to two World Series, made on ALCS and were crowned champions once in that span.

Heyman believes former Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operation David Stearns could be in play. Stearns made a shocking announcement to step down from his role during the MLB postseason, but remains under contract in an advisory role for 2023.

He's no stranger to the Astros organization, though. Stearns spent three seasons as an assistant GM for the Astros. There's belief that the Brewers will require Stearns to finish out his contract in this advisory role, but perhaps the Astros can lure him away.
