Memorial Day Horse Racing Schedule Includes 9 Stakes Races at Belmont & Santa Anita

Monday's Memorial Day horse racing card is a big one at Belmont Park and Santa Anita. Six stakes races at Belmont are part of the Big Apple Showcase that includes a pair of $200,000 runs for New York-bred participants.

Belmont Park Memorial Day Stakes

• Race 3 - Critical Eye Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles
• Race 9 - Commentator Stakes at 1 1/16 miles

The Commentator Stakes drew a robust field of 13 runners with some familiar names such as Bankit (4/1), Sea Foam (20/1) and Dr Ardito (9/5). Ouster (5/1) is a three-time winner since turning four years old and is one of many viable contenders to close the holiday stakes program.

Santa Anita Memorial Day Stakes

"The Great Race Place" at Santa Anita outside Los Angeles has a big racing card on May 29 for Memorial Day. It also includes a huge guaranteed carryover of nearly $3 million for the Pick 6 Jackpot.

Three big Grade 1 stakes races headline the 10-race card.

• Race 5 - $400,000 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on the turf
• Race 7 - $500,000 Shoemaker Mile at 1-mile on the turf
• Race 8 - $400,000 Hollywood Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles

The Shoemaker Mile is a "Win and You're In" Challenge Series qualifying race to the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile at the 2023 Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita.

There are no clear favorites in the wide open Shoemaker Mile, but many top jockeys are flying in for the big race day at Santa Anita. Leading contenders include Hong Kong Harry (7/2) with Flavien Prat riding, Gold Phoenix (4/1), De Jour (6/1) with Luis Saez riding, Balnikov (5/1) with top turf rider Umberto Rispoli up and Exaulted (5/1) with the Santa Anita meet's top jockey Juan Hernandez riding.
