The Citrus Bowl has been played since 1947. It was originally named the Tangerine Bowl until the name was changed to the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1983. From 2003 to 2014, "Citrus" was temporarily removed and it was named the Capital One Bowl.

Kentucky has one previous Citrus Bowl appearance. They defeated Penn State, 27-24, in the 2019 Citrus Bowl.

Iowa also has one previous Citrus Bowl appearance. They defeated LSU, 30-25, in the 2005 Capital One Bowl.
