Carlos Rodon Explains Why He Signed With Giants Over Dodgers

Updated:

Carlos Rodon came out of nowhere to make his first All-Star game appearance and finish fifth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2021. It was perfect timing considering he was about to enter free agency. Rodon recently explained why he eventually opted to sign with the San Francisco Giants.

MLB insider Jon Heyman noted that Rodon had a similar contract offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers on the table. It was a one-year deal worth $22 million. However, the Giants went above and beyond by adding a second year onto the deal via a player option. That sealed the deal for Rodon.

Rodon now has the option to stay with the team or enter free agency again next offseason. All signs point to him opting out, but not to leave San Francisco. It would be a move to add more years onto his current deal, instead. After all, he was just named an All-Star again and is shining with his new team.

The 32-year-old is 8-5 on the season with a 2.66 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 18 starts. Rodon has also racked up 131 strikeouts compared to 35 walks in 105.0 innings. He has limited the power of opposing hitters time and time again, allowing a league-best 0.3 home runs per nine innings.

Despite Rodon's success, the Giants enter the All-Star break on the outside looking in when it comes to the MLB Playoffs. They sit 0.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot with a 48-43 record. San Francisco has odds set at +6000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
