Bears Coach Reveals New Role for Chase Claypool in 2023

Updated:

The Chicago Bears made a midseason trade for Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Chase Claypool, and the end results were less than inspiring. Claypool ended his first season in Chicago with just 14 receptions, 140 receiving yards and 0 touchdowns in seven games with his new team. Making matters worse was the Steelers ending up with the No. 32 overall draft pick for this trade -- essentially a first-round pick.

Fortunately, Chicago's coaching staff understands the need to get Claypool more involved with the offense. One Bears coach revealed an exciting new role for Claypool when the 2023 season rolls around.

Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy recently promised that Claypool should be "getting a lot of opportunities in 2023." It's not exactly clear how Chicago will plan to implement that change, but it's a necessity.

Of the seven games Claypool played in Chicago, he led the team in targets exactly once. That didn't happen until Week 18 of the regular season, where Claypool's 6 targets were also tied Dante Pettis. Claypool caught just 2-of-6 passes for 29 yards in this clash.

Claypool has just one year remaining on his current contract before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2024, and another year of second-rate targets would likely result in the talented playmaker taking his talents elsewhere. A receiver with multiple seasons of 800+ receiving yards on his resume, Claypool should be much more involved next year after having a full offseason to get comfortable with the Bears' offense and build more chemistry with Justin Fields.
