Astros Get Bad News on Latest Michael Brantley Injury Update

Updated:

Houston Astros fans were given a scare when veteran outfielder/designated hitter Michael Brantley exited Sunday's game against the New York Yankees with shoulder discomfort. Unfortunately, further testing has revealed unfortunate results for the AL West leaders.

The Astros announced on Tuesday that Brantley's shoulder discomfort has landed him a stint on the 10-day injured list. His placement is retroactive to June 27, meaning the earliest he can return is on the road against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, July 7.

Michael Brantley Injury Update

Though there isn't any return timetable for Brantley, the silver lining is that he doesn't require surgery. It sounds like all he needs is some time to rest in order to let the discomfort pass.

In the meantime, the 35-year-old's absence will surely be felt. Brantley was having another solid season in Houston, recording five home runs and 26 RBIs while slashing .288/.370/.416 in 64 games (243 at-bats).

As a result of Brantley's injury, the Astros have promoted outfielder Chas McCormick from Triple-A after optioning him to the minors on Sunday. The 27-year-old has six HRs and 16 RBIs in 49 games with Houston this season, but has struggled to consistently hit the ball, proven by his .219 batting average.

Astros World Series Odds

Brantley's likely short injury time shouldn't have much of an effect on the Astros' championship odds. FanDuel Sportsbook currently has Houston available at +600 (No. 3) to win the 2022 World Series this fall.
