3 Best Bets to Win the 2023 Belmont Stakes (Fade the Favorite on Saturday)

Updated:

It's time to bet on the 2023 Belmont Stakes, which has a very competitive group of win contenders in the field of nine for the third and final leg of the Triple Crown.

As you consider your wagering strategy, here are some best bets to add to Win and Place bets along with exotics as you watch and wager on the Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Stakes Best Bets

1. Tapit Trice (3/1)

The race favorite Forte does not make our best bet list. Rather, the second choice Tapit Trice is one to watch and wager on when betting to win. This race is all about stamina and the ability to dole out elevated energy in a balanced way. The projected moderate pace does not figure to provide an advantage to any running style. But this off-the-pace runner and son of Tapit -- who has sired four Belmont Stakes winners -- figures to be wearing down the leaders as they race towards the finish over the long Belmont stretch.

2. Angel of Empire (7/2)

Trainer Brad Cox can be questioned for his 'care' of horses as an EPO trainer, but when there's money on the line, breeders, trainers and horsemen do what it takes to win. Angel of Empire, Hit Show and Tapit Shoes are all trained by Cox, and Angel of Empire is the most versatile. He's won twice this year and finished in-the-money in all four stakes starts at different race tracks. Like Tapit Trice, he too should be fine to gallop out the "Test of the Champion" distance of 1 1/2 miles as a son of Classic Empire and grandsire of Pioneer of the Nile.

3. Arcangelo (8/1)

Arcangelo is not only a dark horse, but he's also a strong win contender and a son of the great Arrogate, a similar late 3-year-old bloomer who became a Breeders' Cup Classic winner and four-time Grade 1 winner. Arcangelo and Hit Show have Tapit influences on the dam side. Both are legit win contenders as dark horses and long shots. Coming off his fast closing win in last month's Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park, Arcangelo looks the part of his sire Arrogate and is ready to make another move forward. Over the last 17 years, there have been 10 horses to win the Belmont Stakes at odds of 6/1 or greater. Arcangelo could be the 11th.
