Zack Greinke Opens Up About Possible 2023 Return

Zack Greinke has checked off almost every possible box that a pitcher can check off during an MLB career. He has won a Cy Young Award, a Gold Glove Award and even a Silver Slugger Award. The 38-year-old has yet to win a World Series ring, but he told one reporter that there still may be time to do achieve that as well.

Anne Rogers of reports that Greinke has yet to make a decision on whether or not he will return in 2023. The 19-year veteran is set to hit free agency after posting a 4-9 record to go along with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP across 26 starts with 73 strikeouts in 137 innings.

Greinke signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Royals last offseason and ended up taking on a mentor role on the same team where he spent the first seven years of his career. He said he "enjoyed the season a lot" and was glad he could end it on a high note, logging a 2.43 ERA in 11 starts after the All-Star break.

While Greinke isn't the dominant force on the mound that he used to be, he's remained effective and is capable of getting batters out. He was worth 2.5 WAR according to Baseball-Reference this year, so he can still contribute.

At this point in his career, Greinke would probably prefer to stay in one spot rather than move to another part of the country. That could make his decision easy. If the Royals want him back, he'll probably re-sign. If not, he'll likely retire. Either way, it's shaping up to be an interesting offseason for both Kansas City and Greinke.
