Why Xander Bogaerts Likely Requires an IL Stint for His Wrist Injury

Updated:

San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts is battling a left wrist injury that has kept him out of the lineup since Saturday.

The team is reportedly hopeful he can return on Thursday, but the Pro Baseball Docs project he will need an IL stint in the near future to rest his ailing wrist.

Xander Bogaerts Injury Update

A critical factor in Bogaerts' grip, hitting, and power, the left wrist has been a persistent ailment for the veteran infielder.

Despite managing the pain with cortisone shots over several years, including during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, the last injection in early March seems to have lost its effectiveness.

It is possible Bogaerts is dealing with wrist tendonitis, as our Pro Baseball Docs believe he would have needed surgery if there was a more significant injury.

Surgery is not considered a viable long-term solution at this point. Instead, the current options to address the issue include rest and a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection.

However, if Bogaerts decides to proceed with the PRP injection, it will require an IL stint, as the procedure necessitates up to two weeks to take effect.

Another cortisone shot is not currently an option until the All-Star break due to potential cartilage damage from repetitive injections.

The situation came to a head on April 18 when a hit-by-pitch likely retriggered inflammation. Prior to the incident, Bogaerts was having an impressive season, batting .347/.422/.556 through that date.

However, his performance has taken a downturn since then, as he's hitting a mediocre .204/.294/.303 with only 8 extra-base hits and 37 strikeouts in 38 games.

Meanwhile, the Padres will need to shuffle their lineup in response to Bogaerts' injury. The silver lining in this scenario is that Kim Ha-Seong will return to his natural position, providing an opportunity to showcase his excellent defense.
