VIDEO: Remembering When Tony Dorsett Scored the First 99-Yard Rushing TD in NFL History

The Dallas Cowboys may have the NFL's richest tradition of elite running back play. From Don Perkins to Emmitt Smith to Ezekiel Elliott, it's not often Dallas has had to go without a true workhorse.

One of the greatest rushers the Cowboys have seen is Tony Dorsett, and he holds the franchise record for the longest rushing play.

This play was incredible for a few reasons. For one, this was the very first 99-yard run in NFL history, and since then only Derrick Henry has joined Dorsett in the exclusive club. Second, Dorsett wasn't even originally supposed to get the ball on this play — the fullback misunderstood the play call and actually ran off the field.

Dorsett's 99-yard run came while the Cowboys only had 10 men on the field. This wasn't just a case of getting into the open field and outrunning the defense, either, he had to make at least three defenders miss to pull this one off.

Dorsett's record, of course, can't be broken — only tied again. With that being said, no Cowboys player has even really come close to matching it, as DeMacro Murray's 91-yard run in 2011 is the second-longest in franchise history, and the third-longest is a tie between Herschel Walker in 1986 and Dorsett himsel if 1977, at 84 yards.
