Trade Rumors Link Cardinals to Trio of Starting Pitchers Ahead of Deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently clinging to the final wild card spot in the National League with a 52-47 record. That's despite the fact that they have posted a 4.06 starting rotation ERA (T-No. 14 in MLB). Insider Derrick Goold recently linked the Cardinals to a trio of pitchers in trade rumors as a result.

Goold noted that St. Louis has expressed interest in Miami's Pablo Lopez, Oakland's Frankie Montas and Los Angeles Angels' Noah Syndergaard. Adding depth behind Adam Wainwright and Miles Mikolas before the deadline has become a sudden priority due to Dakota Hudson's neck strain injury.

Lopez is in the midst of another solid campaign, posting a 7-5 record to go along with a 3.03 ERA and career-best 1.04 WHIP across 20 starts. The 26-year-old is also eligible for arbitration for two more seasons, making this a move that could improve the rotation beyond just the final months of 2022.

Meanwhile, Montas has long been a popular name in trade talks considering he is stuck on a last-place Athletics team. The 29-year-old is 4-9 on the year, but his 3.18 ERA and 1.13 WHIP suggests he just isn't getting any run support. Montas has one year of arbitration eligibility left on his contract.

Syndergaard is likely the most attainable target for the Cardinals here. He is pitching for an Angels team that is quickly falling out of the playoff race and will be a free agent at the end of the 2022 season. The 29-year-old owns a 5-8 record, a 3.83 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP across 15 starts.

St. Louis has odds set at +4000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
