Titans Taking Strategic Approach to Ryan Tannehill's Injury Status for Week 9

Titans Taking Strategic Approach to Ryan Tannehill's Injury Status for Week 9

Updated:

The Tennessee Titans head into Week 9 with a major question mark at quarterback. Starter Ryan Tannehill continues to nurse a seemingly serious ankle injury, but it's unclear if he or backup Malik Willis will be under center against the Kansas City Chiefs.

This uncertainty is all part of Tennessee's strategy ahead of Sunday Night Football.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Titans don't want to reveal their QB plans "until pre-game warmups." Schefter notes Tannehill may be dealing with a "possible" high-ankle sprain, which could lead to Willis starting once again.

The veteran QB was originally injured in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts. He was then spotted in a walking boot, and he ultimately sat out the team's Week 8 win against the Houston Texans. Tannehill got in two limited practices this past week, so it's possible he's able to return in primetime.

If Tannehill can't go, it'll be on the rookie Willis to step up. The Liberty product was used sparingly in Week 8, attempting just 10 passes during his first start, but he would likely be forced to air it out more on Sunday in order to keep up with the Chiefs.

Given their quarterback situation, Tennessee enters this contest as 13.5-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
