Tigers Get Terrible Matt Manning Injury Update

Updated:

The Detroit Tigers' season went from bad to worse on Tuesday. Not only did they get mauled by the Toronto Blue Jays in a 9-3 defeat, but they also saw a key member of their rotation suffer a significant injury.

After the game, it was reported that starting pitcher Matt Manning suffered a fractured pinkie toe in his right foot after getting drilled by a comebacker in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Incredibly, Manning recovered and was able to run to first base to cover the bag on the play, recording the final out that ended the inning.

Manning insists that he wants to make his next scheduled start this Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, but the Tigers may prevent that from happening by placing him on the 10-day injured list. It's important to deal with injuries early in the season so they don't linger or cause players to alter their mechanics, which could lead to further injury.

With Detroit already in last place in the AL Central at 2-8, it's looking like the Tigers may not have much to play for this season. Giving the 25-year-old Manning some time off to heal and recover is probably in the best interest of the club, especially after injuries limited him to just 12 starts last season.
