Steve Kerr Complete NBA Finals History as Player & Coach

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is preparing to hopefully lead his team to yet another title. Kerr is one of the most decorated people in NBA Finals history, enjoying plenty of success as both a player and coach.

He could get one step closer to double-digit rings with a win over the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals.

Steve Kerr Rings as Player

Prior to becoming a head coach, Kerr was a player in the league for an impressive 15 seasons. Though he started in just 30 of his 910 career regular-season games, he carved out his spot as a sharpshooting role player on several championship teams.

Kerr helped the Michael Jordan-led Bulls win three titles (1996, 1997, 1998), and then played a part for another dynasty in the San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003).

Those five championship rings have him tied for 14th among all players in NBA history.

Steve Kerr Finals Stats

Kerr suited up in 27 total NBA Finals games a player. He averaged 15.5 minutes over those contests while putting up 3.6 points, 1.1 assists and 0.7 rebounds per game. His Finals career high is 9 points, which he notched in the series-clinching Game 6 of the 1997 Finals against the Utah Jazz.

Steve Kerr Finals Shot

Kerr's greatest Finals moment came during that Game 6 against the Jazz in 1997. Michael Jordan told Kerr he would pass to the point guard if John Stockton, Kerr's defender, came over to double team with the game tied in the final seconds. The play unfolded exactly as Jordan predicted, and he hit an open Kerr, who drained the go-ahead jumper that would end up clinching the title.

Steve Kerr Rings as a Coach

Kerr has spent his entire head-coaching career with the Warriors, taking over before the start of the 2014-15 season. He took the team to Finals in his very first year and won the title, kicking off a run of perennial success.

Kerr has won three total championships while serving as coach of the Warriors. In addition to winning the 2015 Finals, Golden State also won in 2017 and 2018 under Kerr.

Steve Kerr Finals Record and Appearances as a Coach

Kerr and the Warriors haven't been perfect in the Finals, though. They are 3-2 during Kerr's tenure, losing in 2016 to the Cleveland Cavaliers and in 2019 to the Toronto Raptors. The 2022 Finals mark his sixth appearance as a head coach.
