Steelers' Asking Price for Chase Claypool Trade Revealed

As the NFL trade deadline nears, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool has been involved in rumors. A fresh start might be best for both sides as Claypool's role has diminished and the Steelers vie to turn things around.

For those wondering what Pittsburgh wants in a potential deal, Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber has the answer. According to Huber, a league executive believes that the Steelers want "multiple second-round picks," as well as a third- and fifth-rounder for Claypool.

Assuming that the Steelers' demands are true, it's hard imagining them getting that sort of return. The San Francisco 49ers send second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks earlier this week to land Christian McCaffrey, who's a much bigger game-changer than Claypool.

Claypool exploded onto the scene as a rookie in 2020, recording 62 catches for 873 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Unfortunately, his sophomore season saw a slight decline before having a slow start in 2022. He's tallied a 23-225-1 stat line through six games, putting him on pace for 65 catches, 638 yards and three TDs in 17 games.

In other words, Claypool's stock is likely at an all-time low right now. Still, it makes sense for the Steelers to get whatever they can for him. Diontae Johnson is the team's clear-cut No. 1 WR, while George Pickens has all the potential in the world to grow into the No. 2 spot.

What could make the 24-year-old an attractive target is his contract. Next season marks the final year of his rookie deal — a campaign where he'll carry a cap hit just north of $2.1 million. That's cheaper than a lot of veteran wideouts, which might entice a contender to roll the dice on him.

The NFL trade deadline takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. ET. Only time will tell if the Steelers' rumored asking price in a potential Claypool trade drops by then.
