Seahawks Rookie Earns Hilarious New Nickname

NFL training camps continue to push players as hard as possible now that Week 1 of the preseason is here. While intense camp sessions can lead to the occasional battles between players, they also serve as a way to bring teammates closer.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Bo Melvin spoke to reporters on Wednesday night about a moniker that his teammates have come up with for fellow rookie Tariq Woolen. The hilarious new nickname in question is none other than "Avatar."

Melton told reporters that the nickname stems from Woolen's impressive size (6-foot-4) and athleticism (4.26-second 40-yard dash). It's a play on the 10-foot-tall Na'vi species, who were also known for their genetic superiority, from James Cameron's 2009 film, Avatar.

A fifth-round pick in April, Woolen has already impressed coaches by showcasing his size and speed at training camp. He's already earned several opportunities to be the starting right CB at practice due to Sidney Jones and Tre Brown's injuries and hasn't looked out of place whatsoever.

Woolen began his tenure at UTSA as a wide receiver for three seasons before shifting over to cornerback in 2020. He went on to play 18 games over two years at the position, recording 60 tackles, nine defended passes, a pair of interceptions and 1.5 sacks.

The Seahawks secondary could use what Woolen brings to the table after surrendering 265.5 passing yards per game in 2021 — second-worst in the NFL. If he can take advantage of any preseason opportunities given to him, he has a great shot at playing a key role in Seattle this season.
