Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 2/19/23

Updated:

The Santa Anita Classic Meet continues on Sunday with 9 races starting at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local time) at "The Great Race Place" outside of Los Angeles.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 4 is the $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes for older Cal-bred fillies and mares sprinting 6 furlongs. Alice Marble (7/5) and Doris Mae (3/1) are top picks in the 5-horse field, and they are ridden by top jockey's Flavien Prat and the meet's leading jockey Juan Hernandez. Eddie's New Dream (5/2) re-entered after scratching out of a race Saturday.

Eddi'es New Dream finished a close second in a minor stakes here last month just in front of favored Alice Marble. She's put in two sharp 5 furlong works this month ahead of her 2023 debut. Alice Marble has won 5 of her last 10 starts and hit the board (top 3) in all 10 races. Front-running Doris Mae is a lightly raced 4-year-old who has won 2-of-4 starts and finished third in her stakes debut New Year's Eve.

2. Fast and Shiny and Blessed Touch, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 6/1 and 5/2

Race 8 is a high-end Allowance race for 3-year-old fillies sprinting 6 furlongs. Front-running favorite Procrastination (9/5) has not raced since August when she finished 2nd in her second start - a Grade 2 race. Aptly-named Getthemoney (5/2) is also 1-for-2 and faces winners for the first time in her stakes debut. She's not raced since Sept.

Blessed Touch (5/2) is 1-for-4 and finished a close 5th in a Grade 1 race last out in Dec. Fast and Shiny (6/1), sired by Bernardini and conditioned by the meets top trainer, controversial Bob Baffert, has faced better in three graded stakes races. She will also be running along the lead looking carve out comfortable fractions and capable of winning at a price.

3. Moorea Time and Isabel Ludlow, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 6/1

Race 9 is a Maiden Special Weight for Cal-bred 3-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf. An open race with higher payoff potential in the 11-horse field. Projected contenders include Proof She Zips (4/1), Danehill Song (4/1) with Juan Hernandez riding, Square and Rare (5/1) in her debut and Isabel Ludlow (6/1) on the far outside also making her career debut with HOF jockey John Velazquez riding.

Proof She Zips is 1-for-2 and races at Santa Anita for the first time and tries dirt for the first time as well. Danehill Song missed the money in her only start here a month ago. Moorea Time (3/1) gets first time Lasix with Flavien Prat up on the rail. She has a pair of 3rd place finishes and looks more capable with better works in place as well.
