Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 1/22/23

Updated:

The Santa Anita Classic Meet continues, and Sunday's card features 9 races with post time to start the day at 3:30 p.m. ET.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Kiss My Kat (5/2) makes her second start and will be pushing the top choice up front after finishing third in her debut in October. Blazing Bardot (5/1) and Agree to Settle (6/1) are projected to challenge for a piece of the money.

2. Harlocap and Navy Man, Race 6

Race 6 is a Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. The numberFire algorithm projects Harlocap (8/5) to win with HOF top jockey John Velazquez riding for controversial Bob Baffert, who tops the trainer standings at the meet.

Navy Man (7/2) and Yellow Brick (5/2) are leading challengers. Harlocap has two runner-up finishes in two starts and just missed here three weeks ago running on the front end before losing in the final sixteenth. Navy Man was the favorite that race and faded to finish well back out of the money.

3. Daniel's Magic King Apollo, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 8/1

Race 7 is a Starter Allowance for older horses sprinting 6 furlongs on the turf. Daniel's Magic (3/1) with top turf rider Umberto Rispoli is the projected winner by numberFire's data with Flavien Prat guiding Savile Row (3/1) as a top challenger.

King Apollo (8/1) and Stotland (8/1) are longer odds challengers according to numberFire. King Apollo makes his 2022 debut off a long layoff and won here last year in similar race conditions at more than half the odds. Top UK rider Franki Dettori rides.
