Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 5/13/23

Updated:

The rebranded spring portion of the Santa Anita six-month racing season started on Friday, April 21 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

There are 9 races including a Grade 3 stakes at "The Great Race Place" on Saturday, and post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local time.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 7 is an Allowance race for Cal-bred 3-year-olds sprinting 6 furlongs on the turf. Devil Among Us (7/2) breaks from the rail with top jockey Juan Hernandez as the top pick of numberFire's algorithm, followed by Irish Royalty (4/1).

Devil Among Us has finished second and third in his two starts this year in Allowance company. Left Hand Man (4/1) scored a fast debut win two races back but was overmatched in his stakes debut last race.

2. Dr. Schivel and C Z Rocket, Race

FanDuel Racing Odds: 6/5 and 7/5

Race 8 is an Allowance sprint for older horses at 6 furlongs. There are just five runners and no money to be made as the two prohibitive favorites look to decide the race. Dr. Schivel (6/5) is the top pick of Guaranteed Tip Sheet and the class of the field as a multiple Grade 1 winner. The meet's top jockey Juan Hernandez rides, and Dr. Schivel has solid morning workouts in place for his first start in more than a year.

C Z Rocket (7/5) is a win contender and the top choice by numberFire's data. He's a multiple graded stakes winner and has better recent form on his side.

3. Offlee Naughty and Dicey Mo Chara, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 8/5 and 5/2

Race 9 is the $100,000 San Luis Rey Stakes for older horses at 1 1/2 miles on the downhill turf course. The favorite Offlee Naughty (8/5) looks tough as a solid choice of both numberFire and Guaranteed Tip Sheet.

Top jockey and turf rider Umberto Rispoli is on Offlee Naughty, who won two in a row and has a reputation as the circuit's top turf horse, according to GTS. His recent win last month in the FanDuelTV presented Grade 2 Charles Whittingham produced a powerful rally running each quarter-mile faster than the previous.

Dicey Mo Chara (5/2) ran better in race numbers from start to finish in his last race, and he's a win contender of both numberFire. Opry (4/1) has never missed the money in four starts at Santa Anita.
