Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Friday 5/12/23

The rebranded spring portion of the Santa Anita six-month racing season started on Friday, April 21 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

There are 8 races at "The Great Race Place" on Friday and post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local time.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

1. Smokem Ez and She's My Niece, Race 3

Race 3 is a Maiden Special Weight for baby 2-year-olds sprinting 4 1/2 furlongs. Often a crapshoot as these young runners learn their way. But numberFire's data She's My Niece (8/5) for leading trainer Doug O'Neill a top win contender along with Smokem Ez (5/2), who is a best bet of Guaranteed Tip Sheet and has strong morning works in place for his debut.

2. Silver N Black and Montana, Race 6

Race 6 is a Maiden Special Weight for Cal-breds going 1 mile on the turf. Silver N Black (5/2) is a best bet, according to GTS, and Montana (5/1) is a top challenger. The numberFire algorithm agrees. Not a strong group of runners, and Silver N Black can break through in his West Coast debut after improved speed in races at Gulfstream.

3. Getthemoney and Doinitthehardway, Race 7

Race 7 is the featured allowance race for 3-year-old fillies at 7 furlongs. Just six runners, and the favorites Doinitthehardway (7/5) and Getthemoney (5/2) square off again after each finished in front of the other in maiden races last summer at Del Mar. The numberFire projections along with Guaranteed Tip Sheet picks have those two top win contenders, along with Blessed Touch (5/2) breaking from the rail. Doinitthehardway has the top jockey Juan Hernandez riding for trainer Bob Baffert and adds blinkers. She's the fastest horse in the field based on her speed figures. Getthemoney ran better than her third-place finish in her comeback race six weeks ago.
