Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Friday 4/28/23

Updated:

The rebranded spring portion of Santa Anita's six-month racing season stated Friday, April 21 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

There are 9 races at "The Great Race Place" on Friday and post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Santa Anita Betting

According to numberFire horse racing projections and Guaranteed Tip Sheet (GTS), these are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing today.

Did you follow FanDuel Racing picks and cash in on the biggest longshot in a recent Allowance race at Keeneland? Longshot Time For Trouble (18/1) cashed $2 win bets for $37.50 and a $2 exacta paid $189. At Santa Anita, top pick Pequena Tormenta (2/1) won last week by 11 lengths, and the April 22 card at Santa Anita went 3-for-3 winners including a pair of stakes races.

Race 4 is a Claiming race for 3-year-olds and up at 6 1/2 furlongs. Guaranteed Tip Sheet has a best bet on Divine Rascal (5/2), who finished runner-up at this level two races back and was claimed. Sonofafinch (2/1) is the opening morning line favorite and has the top speed figures but has been off since last June. The numberFire data like Divine Rascal and also Quick Intro (6/1) as a top win challenger.

2. Moon Ice and Grand Tiger, Race 5

Race 5 has a full field of 14 Maiden Cal-breds sprinting 6 furlongs on the turf. The numberFire data order of finish is projected as Get the Gold (12/), California Tiger (6/1), and Moon Ice (4/1), who has the top jockey Juan Hernandez riding for the GTS top pick. Moon Ice has finished in the money in all four maiden turf starts. Grand Tiger (5/2) is the opening line favorite and makes his long-awaited career debut as a 4-year-old. Top turf rider Umberto Rispoli gets the call for trainer Brian Koriner, who can fire with first-timers. Especially Grand Tiger, who has some blistering fast 5-furlong bullet training works in the morning.

3. Sunshine Babe and Eleuthera, Race

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 5/2

Race 7 is the featured Allowance race for Cal-bred fillies and mares going 1 mile on the turf. Eleuthera (5/2) gets the call as the winner, according to numberFire's data. She's a top win contender for Guaranteed Tip Sheet along with True Patriot (4/1), who has Juan Hernandez riding. Eleuthera finished runner-up as the favorite here in January, just a neck in front of Sunshine Babe (3/1), who can turn the tables with a better trip than her last three weeks ago. Sunshine Babe also 'won' this state-bred condition last fall, but was disqualified for interference.
