Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 2/18/23

Updated:

The Santa Anita Classic Meet continues on Saturday with 12 races starting at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local time) at "The Great Race Place" outside of Los Angeles.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 3 is a Maiden Special Weight for Cal-bred 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The two prohibitive favorites Moon Ice (9/5) and Catalina Eddy (8/5) are the top picks by numberFire's data. Front-running Moon Ice is ridden by the meet's top jockey Juan Hernandez, who has 36 wins at the meet while the next closest jockey has 14 wins.

Catalina Eddy finished runner-up in her debut at long odds earlier this month. Moon Ice should break through after finishing second here in two January starts as the favorite. Transitory (6/1) finished a close third behind Moon Ice last race.

2. Adare Manor and Teddy's Barino, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/5 and 5/2

Race 8 is an Allowance race for older fillies and mares at seven furlongs. Controversial top trainer Bob Baffert saddles the heavy favorite Adare Manor (7/5) with the meet's top jockey Juan Hernandez riding the numberFire top pick. She's off a five-month layoff but looks sharp in training. She also won twice here early last year and followed up with a pair of graded stakes runner-up finishes.

Teddy's Barino (5/2) and Ain't Easy (4/1) are the main challengers and in-the-money finishers by numberFire's data.

3. Bay Storm and Eddie's New Dream, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 4/1

Race 9 is the $100,000 Wishing Well Stakes for older fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf. The numberFire data leans towards the favorite Bay Storm (3/1) with Eddie's New Dream (4/1) and Lady Jae (8/1) capable contenders.

Bay Storm has hit the board in nine straight starts, including three wins and five runner-up finishes. Two of those were recent Grade 3 races, including earlier this month at Santa Anita when just missing the win after running in the lead for one mile. Less distance here benefits her great form.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
