Saints Wide Receiver Involved in Trade Rumors Ahead of Deadline
The New Orleans Saints are looking to turn things around after starting the year 2-4. Given their current injury troubles, New Orleans could explore making deals at the NFL trade deadline to better round out this roster.
It turns out one Saints wide receiver is a potential candidate to be dealt by November.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler called wideout Marquez Callaway "another receiver to watch" in the lead-up to the trade deadline. Fowler believes Callaway is the "odd man out" behind Michael Thomas, Chris Olave and Jarvis Landry, making him expendable ahead of restricted free agency.
Callaway originally joined the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020, appearing in 11 games as a rookie while recording 213 receiving yards. He then saw a heightened role in 2021 due to injuries, leading to career highs in targets (84), receptions (46), yards (698) and touchdowns (6).
With more competition among pass-catchers, Callaway's been squeezed out over the first six games. He's managed to haul in just 9 catches and ranks sixth on the team with 17 targets.
Following his career year, Callaway could receive some interest from WR-needy squads. His experience as a punt and kick return man in the pros adds to his appeal for anyone in need of a boost on special teams.
The Saints figure to be active at the deadline, which is slated for Nov. 1, as they hope to make strides in the second half.
