Refs Screwed Panthers With Incorrect Penalty Call on DJ Moore

The Carolina Panthers looked well on their way to defeating the Atlanta Falcons when DJ Moore caught a 62-yard touchdown with seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the Panthers were given a 15-yard penalty after Moore removed his helmet in celebration, resulting in kicker Eddy Pineiro missing the 48-yard extra-point attempt.

According to former NFL head coach Tony Dungy, the referees screwed the Panthers by making the wrong call. Dungy reports that NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay disagrees with the penalty, saying that Moore was off the field when he removed his helmet, meaning that the call was totally botched.

After Pineiro missed the extra point, the game was sent to overtime, resulting in a Falcons victory. Considering how the Panthers could've won the game and taken over first place in the NFC South had it not been for Moore's penalty, this blown call might end up being a turning point in Carolina's season.

Nevertheless, Moore is a fifth-year veteran and should know the risks that come with taking off one's helmet so close to the field. Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks told reporters after the game that the wideout is "smart enough" to learn from the situation and that the team "won't make that same mistake" going forward.

Sunday's loss resulted in the Panthers taking over the bottom spot in the NFC South with a 2-6 record. Even though Wilks' squad is only a few games out of first place, Carolina's +3500 odds to win the division rank dead last on FanDuel Sportsbook, proving the uphill battle that's ahead.

As unfortunate as the refs screwing them over is, the Panthers must forget about it and move on to the next game. They'll be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. ET when they pay a visit to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Panthers vs Bengals Odds

The Panthers need a monumental effort to overcome Cincinnati. As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Bengals as the 8.5-point spread and -400 moneyline favorites six days away from the Week 9 matchup.
