3 Rangers Who Won't Be on the Roster at the Start of the 2023 Season

Updated:
A 24-24 record to start the 2022 MLB campaign had Texas Rangers fans believing that a five-year playoff drought could come to an end. Instead, the Rangers have gone 28-41 in 69 games since then, putting any potential championship aspirations on hold for the time being.
Sitting 10.5 games out of the American League's final wild-card spot, Texas general manager Chris Young must turn his attention toward the 2023 campaign. He must trim the fat if the Royals hope to return to prominence, meaning several players are likely going through their final weeks in the Lone Star State.
Here are three Rangers who likely won't be on the roster at the start of the 2023 MLB season.
Rangers Roster Rumors
1. Martin Perez, SP
A strong 2022 campaign could be an incentive for Martin Perez to chase a bigger payday this offseason. After joining the Rangers on a one-year, $4 million deal, the veteran pitcher has had a career year by going 9-3 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.197 WHIP through 23 starts. Perez's first-half performance resulted in the first All-Star nod of his career, only upping his stock. While eight of his 11 MLB seasons have come in a Rangers jersey, the southpaw is 31 years old and there's no telling how many big contracts he has left. It'd be wise for him to test the open market, meaning there's a chance he won't be back in Texas next season.
2. Kole Calhoun, RF
It's beginning to look like Kole Calhoun's best baseball days are behind him. The former 33-home run hitter has been dreadful this year, batting .211 while recording 11 HRs, 43 RBIs and 105 strikeouts in 97 games. Not only is his 30% strikeout rate the highest of his career, but it's also much higher than the MLB average (21.4%). When the Rangers signed Calhoun last offseason, they made sure to include a $5.5 million team option. There's absolutely no way that he's worth that amount based on this season's play. Declining the option seems like the next logical step, meaning Calhoun may need to look for a new employment opportunity this winter.
3. Charlie Culberson, 3B/LF
Charlie Culberson has played a utility role for the Rangers over the last two seasons, but this may wind up being his final campaign with the club. While the Rome, GA native's .257 batting average is an improvement over last year (.243), Culberson has yet to hit a home run in 105 at-bats and hasn't had the same impact off the bench as he did last year. His exit velocity has also dropped from 99.5mph to 84.0 to 82.3 over the last three seasons while his 55.0% ground-ball percentage is significantly higher than the Major League average (43.8%). At 33 years old, Culberson is what he is at this point and the Rangers shouldn't have a hard time replacing his bench bat this offseason.
