Players to Drop for Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickups in Fantasy Football

Updated:

Three weeks of the NFL season are already in the books. It's still a bit too early to hit the panic button, even if some of your mid-round draft picks are already busts. But, don't be afraid to cut ties with some injured players or some underwhelming late-round picks.

Week 4 Waiver Wire

You'll regret cutting ties with high-upside players too early, but you also don't want duds hanging around taking up valuable bench space.

Fantasy Football Players to Drop

With that in mind, here are three players--all rostered in at least 50 percent of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues--that you can drop to make space for Week 4 wavier wire pickups.

1. Raheem Mostert, RB, Miami Dolphins (56% Rostered)

Raheem Mostert continues to post underwhelming fantasy performances in the start of his Miami Dolphins career. He's operating on a near-even 50/50 rushing split with Chase Edmonds, and owns just 8% of the target share. This is on a team that ranks top-10 in their pass ratio and that doesn't appear to be slowing time anytime soon. The 50/50 split isn't what scares me off, it's the career-low 3.3 yards per attempt and underwhelming 3 red zone rushing attempts. There's better backs and ones with higher upside.

2. Darnell Mooney, WR, Chicago Bears (69% Rostered)

It's not often you think about dropping a roster's true No. 1 wide receiver, but that rings true with Chicago's Darnell Mooney. Mooney may lead his team with 11 targets, but that's a frightening number considering he's their top option. Other No. 1 wideouts such as Stefon Diggs and Cooper Kupp have already seen 35. Mooney is no Kupp or Diggs, but the lack of opportunity is staggering. Chicago made just 45 pass attempts across their first three games, which is on pace for just 255 through a 17-game season. Five current NFL teams are already more than halfway to that mark while Chicago's 30.2% pass percentage is by far the lowest in the league.

3. Julio Jones, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (61% Rostered)

This is the toughest choice on this list, but it may be time to cut ties with Julio Jones. The veteran is slated to play in Week 4, but has already missed two of the first three games. This already feels like a repeat of last season, where a banged-up Jones played in only 10 games and finished as WR92. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin (once healthy) are the No. 1 and 2 options for Tom Brady. Throw in a Russell Gage, who has filled in nicely amidst Tampa Bay's myriad of playmaker injuries over the last two weeks, and this WR room is anything but open for easy opportunities. The sample size is small because of Jones' 1 game played, but he didn't see a single red zone target. It's just too hard to trust at this point.
