Panthers Head Coach Candidate Makes Shocking Decision

Panthers Head Coach Candidate Makes Shocking Decision

Updated:

The Carolina Panthers are in need of a new head coach following the firing of Matt Rhule earlier this season. Steve Wilks stepped in as the interim head coach and is now among the candidates for the full-time role after doing a solid job.

One name the Panthers wanted to interview is no longer interested, though. Jerod Mayo, who is currently a linebacker coach with the New England Patriots, has turned down the opportunity to interview for Carolina's head coaching job.

This means Mayo either hopes to remain with the Patriots or is awaiting a better opportunity elsewhere. The Panthers' situation is certainly daunting given the roster's lack of offensive talent and perpetual uncertainty at quarterback.

Mayo has been a name of interest for several coaching vacancies this winter, but early signs indicate he's not currently interested in making that jump quite yet.

Plenty of head coaching and coordinator jobs are still available, so it's possible Mayo changes his mind at some point, especially with the Patriots facing an uncertain future after a disappointing 2022 season.
