New Team Emerges in Potential Corbin Burnes Trade Sweepstakes

Updated:

The MLB hot stove simmered down during Thanksgiving week, but things are expected to pick back up with the league's annual Winter Meetings scheduled for Dec. 5. The Winter Meetings typically result in a bevy of offseason moves from free agent signings to blockbuster trades.

One of the names MLB teams will be watching during the Winter Meetings is Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes. With just two years remaining on his current contract, the Brewers are beginning to shop Burnes this offseason for a potential massive return. The one-time Cy Young award winner should have the ability to earn $30 million per year in free agency, something the Brewers are clearly not willing to pay.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal examined Burnes' trade market and named a new team who has emerged in his bidding.

Rosenthal explains that the Baltimore Orioles are exploring the free agent starting pitcher market, but "cannot be ruled out on a trade for any starter who might be available." He lists several tradeable starting pitchers, but Burnes is the first name on his list.

The Orioles are flush with talent in the minor leagues. Rosenthal indicates that top prospects Colton Cowser, Jordan Westburg and Coby Mayo "could appeal to prospective trade partners."

Baltimore took a big step by winning 83 games and finishing over .500 for the first time since 2016. The team was in the playoff hunt until the final weeks of the regular season and is poised to take the next step with their young core in 2023. Starting pitching was a weakness, however. The Orioles ranked just 21st in starting pitching ERA, and by contrast, their bullpen ranked 9th.
