Nationals Sign Juan Soto's Brother as MLB International Signing Period Opens

Updated:

The Washington Nationals are certainly hoping lightning strikes twice as they have inked Elian Soto to a deal during the international signing period with a bonus of $225,000. Elian is the younger brother of All-Star outfielder Juan Soto and has already spent time at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

Soto came to the United State to see the Nationals win the 2019 World Series and see his brother compete in the Home Run Derby this past summer. He got a taste of what success looks like and will be looking to find the same for himself. There's no denying that the 17-year-old has the talent to shine.

The left-handed outfielder has been applauded for his unrelenting power at the plate. Soto smashes the ball past the fences, but will need to work on balancing the other aspects of his game in the minor leagues. After all, he was signed despite not ranking among MLB.com's top 50 international amateurs.

That is far from the worst thing in the world, though. Keep in mind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was not expected to be a star when he was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2015. He stayed true to his craft in the minors and has now developed into one of the best pure power hitters in the game.

Soto already made a good first impression when he switched his verbal commitment from the New York Mets to the Nationals in January of 2022. Now he will be aiming stand out with his game. Washington has odds set at +50000 to win the 2023 World Series, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
